Why on earth am I doing this?
I am going to start my first blog on this site that's designed to detail my foray into game dev, quite unconventionally, by giving a list of things I don't possess.
- I don't have any formal training in game development.
- I don't have any formal training in development.
- I don't have any formal training in anything.
So what would inspire someone severely lacking the aforementioned vitamins and minerals to try and develop their own video game?
The first reason is a very very very simple one, I have always been utterly obsessed with video games.
Most of the time, this obsession was to my detriment (sorry mum, probably could've gone to Oxford if Fable 2 wasn't as good as it is).
However, video games have also been massively beneficial to me and my development as well.
I forged my relationship with my best friend in the entire world, by sharing video games during the pandemic.
I have been consoled, inspired and genuinely moved by the creativity, ingenuity and brilliance of the art form, more times than I can count, and I wanted to try my hand at something, well, pure.
I sincerely believe that sharing a game with someone, is one of the truest formulations of raw humanity we have, and as we lose an increasing amount of ourselves to automation, I genuinely and wholeheartedly believe that creating, sharing and playing games is one of the last bastions of creative expression we will have.
Secondly, one of my persevering beliefs is that I can train myself to a serviceable standard in pretty much anything (sumo wrestling not applicable) through sheer determination and bullheadedness, and I legitimately love the process of learning and getting better at something, which I have neglected for a while.
Those two things combined are why I am undertaking this challenge, and I will share the entire journey here, from prototyping and early dev screenshots to finished and playable (free) game!
My next post here will probably be on my inspirations so you get a flavour for my idea and how it will work, so keep your eyes peeled for that!
